What is OLIVER?

OLIVER is MassGIS' general purpose OnLIne data ViewER. OLIVER allows you to browse, view and download any datalayer which MassGIS has available for public distribution. This includes over 867 datalayers symbolized (or styled) into more than 1,000 themes! A sample of available datalayers:

  • aerial photos
  • roads
  • parcels
  • wetlands

  • OLIVER can download data directly from our database to your hard drive. Vector data can be extracted as shapefiles and raster data as GeoTiffs. OLIVER allows data to be examined before being downloaded and a small geographic area of data can be selected to minimize download time.

    OLIVER can:
  • draw maps
  • zoom to geographic extents
  • zoom to an address
  • download data 3 ways
  • bookmark maps

  • What do I need to run OLIVER?

OLIVER is written as a stand-alone Java application and deployed via Java Web Start. OLIVER was first launched in August 2004. While OLIVER can run in different versions of Java (1.4.2+), MassGIS recommends using the latest Java (as of 11/18/09 1.6.0_17) because our documentation will match the Java 1.6 Java Control Panel. Different versions of Java have control panels the look slightly different. MassGIS has tested Java 1.6.0_17 on Windows XP.

    Can't I just start?
Many computers come preloaded with Java. Feel free to just try to start OLIVER by clicking on the red MassGIS logo in the upper left of this web page.

    What's New

    OLIVER 3.1 Released 8/18/09

    New Features and Fixes
    1. Switch to more up-to-date street data for geocoding / address matching
    2. Improved algorithm for geocoding / address matching
    3. Ability to clip image data (e.g. orthos) as well as vector data (points/lines/polygons)
    4. Ability to switch between various foldersets of data
OLIVER starts with a subset of the most popular data now - to see EVERYTHING go to the Viewer menu, Change Layer Tree, choose Complete DataViewer Menu. You'll get more folders and more data in the folders.
    5. Removed confusing user login screen
    6. Now backed by GeoServer instead of ArcIMS
    7. Faster data downloads

OLIVER was switched to GeoServer instead of ArcIMS for maps and queries. MassGIS runs 3 GeoServer machines so capacity is greater.

Note on bookmarks: Any bookmarks created with pre-August 18th version of OLIVER will not work in the new GeoServer OLIVER because the datalayer names and request syntax are different.

    Notes 11/19/2009:
    - OLIVER documentation has been streamlined and rewritten. We hope this helps smooth the process of getting and running OLIVER.
    - We are working on speeding up the drawing of rasters in OLIVER (aerial photos, USGS topo maps)
    - If you are running OLIVER (or its cousins
MORIS or SPOLIVER) within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts network you can check on the GeoServer map system status with the Nagios network monitor. Log in as "guest", "guest". Click on "Service Detail" in the upper left. Scroll down the page and find "giswebservices.massgis.state.ma.us", "Simple WMS Check". This line may be green (good) or red (bad).
