2007Earthworks Projects, Inc.JP Dooryard Tree Pilot Project$38,854.00This pilot project addressed a key gap in the effort to increase canopy cover in the City of Boston, by including trees on private property. Due to limited funding, the committee recommended funding at the level of $17,500 to cover the cost of the project manager.
2007Earthworks Projects, Inc.Boston Grown$15,000.00Funding to train disadvantaged residents of the City of Boston to provide volunteer arboricultural care for local wild fruit orchards growing within the city. Produce from the orchards will be harvested by trained youth stewards and neighborhood volunteer groups and will be provided to local low-cost food distributors. The produce distribution will be targeted to food pantries and shelters for homeless citizens and other agencies and organizations that serve disadvantaged populations. The project proponents will develop a marketing campaign for the produce to educate the public about the many environmental and social benefits of buying locally produced foods and foods that are grown in urban centers.
2007Urban Ecology InstituteBoston's Urban Tree Canopy Initiative$5,000.00A grant to support the summer 2007 tree planting efforts of the Urban Ecology Institute as part of the Grow Boston Greener initiative to plant 100,000 new trees in the city by the year 2020. This grant was used to provide trees for pilot planting projects in the Grove Hall neighborhood of Roxbury. These pilot plantings will serve as models for the development of neighborhood-based projects that will rely upon community volunteers and form the backbone of the 100,00 tree planting effort.

2006Boston Natural Areas NetworkUrban Wilds E-Report$25,000.00This project to be combined with a similar proposal from Earthworks to develop one comprehensive report that summarizes both the status of the urban wilds and the lessons learned from their management. The Committee saw utility in both projects but requests a collaboration between Earthworks and BNAN that would, among other things, realize cost savings through elimination of duplicate printing and administrative costs.
2006Mass Audubon Boston Nature CenterBoston Nature Center$5,000.00Provides a good means of addressing a large number of trees for relatively low cost, provided the trees meet the criteria for Heritage trees, the trees receive regular maintenance, and the site is open to the public free of charge.
