Abstract:

This layer was created by combining an anchorage berth dataset digitized from NOAA nautical charts by MassGIS/CZM and selected anchorage areas extracted from NOAA's ENC Direct to GIS web portal.
The anchorage berth dataset contains a polygon digitized based on the locations of individual berths. These individual berths are mapped in the nautical chart lines data layer developed by Photo Science Inc. of Gaithersburg, Maryland for the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management.
NOAA's ENC Direct to GIS web portal provides comprehensive access to display, query, and download all available NOAA ENC data in a variety of GIS/CAD formats for non-navigational purposes using Internet mapping service technology. An anchorage area is an area in which vessels anchor or may anchor (IHO Dictionary, S-32, 5th Edition, 130).

Purpose:

These data were used in the development of a comprehensive ocean management plan to protect critical marine resources and foster sustainable uses in Massachusetts state waters as mandated in the Oceans Act of 2008.

The approach/harbor scale anchorage areas were downloaded from NOAA's ENC Direct website using the Spatial Direct Data Order Form on May 21, 2009. The website was up-to-date through April 9, 2009. See the NOAA ENC Direct to GIS help file (<http://ocs-spatial.ncd.noaa.gov/encdirect/help/helpfile.htm>) for more information about the different scale bands of data and for a link to the Spatial Direct Data Order Form.
The data were projected to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (FIPS zone 2001), meters. Anchorage areas C, D, L, and M were extracted and merged with the anchorage berth dataset.
