Abstract:
These data were created by combining the Cape Cod Bay disposal site created by CZM and active disposal sites (Cape Cod Canal, Cleveland Ledge, and Massachusetts Bay) selected from the dumping grounds data layer extracted from NOAA's Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) Direct to GIS web portal.
The Cape Cod Bay Disposal Site (CCBDS) is centered at coordinates 41° 54.406' N, 70° 13.268' W (NAD 83) and is located 8.0 nmi (14.9 km) southwest of Long Point, Provincetown, Massachusetts. The site has a relatively flat, featureless seafloor with an average water depth of 102 ft (31 m). The bottom gently slopes from a depth of 30.8 m in the southeast corner of the site to a depth of 31.4 m in the northwest. Encompassing a 1 nmi2 (3.42 km2) area of seafloor within the east-central region of Cape Cod Bay, CCBDS receives sediments dredged primarily from Wellfleet, Barnstable, Plymouth, and Duxbury Harbors. Designated in 1990, CCBDS is the newest of the 10 New England active open water disposal sites. Approximately 951,000 yd3 of material have been disposed at the site. These data were provided to MA CZM by Richard B. Loyd, US Army Corps of Engineers, Concord, MA on 20081205.
NOAA's ENC Direct to GIS web portal provides comprehensive access to display, query, and download all available NOAA ENC data in a variety of GIS/CAD formats for non-navigational purposes using Internet mapping service technology. A dumping ground is a sea area where dredged material or other potentially more harmful material, e.g. explosives, chemical waste, is deliberately deposited (derived from IHO Chart Specifications, M-4).
Purpose:
These data were used in the development of a comprehensive ocean management plan to protect critical marine resources and foster sustainable uses in Massachusetts state waters as mandated in the Oceans Act of 2008.

The approach/harbor scale dumping ground sites were downloaded from NOAA's ENC Direct website using the Spatial Direct Data Order Form on May 21, 2009. The website was up-to-date through April 9, 2009. See the NOAA ENC Direct to GIS help file (<http://ocs-spatial.ncd.noaa.gov/encdirect/help/helpfile.htm>) for more information about the different scale bands of data and for a link to the Spatial Direct Data Order Form.
The data were projected to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (FIPS zone 2001), meters. The active disposal sites (Cape Cod Canal, Cleveland Ledge, and Massachusetts Bay) were then extracted and merged with the Cape Cod Bay disposal site.
