Abstract:
This GIS layer shows the locations of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps in Massachusetts and contains an attribute with a URL to a PDF version of each ESI map. ESI maps summarize shorelines, biological resources, and human-use resources that are at risk if an oil spill occurs. ESI maps include three kinds of information: shoreline rankings, biological resources, and human-use resources. Shorelines are ranked according to their sensitivity, the natural persistence of oil, and the expected ease of cleanup. Biological resources are oil-sensitive animals, as well as habitats that either (a) are used by oil-sensitive animals, or (b) are themselves sensitive to spilled oil. Human-use resources are resources and places important to humans and sensitive to oiling, such as public beaches and parks, marine sanctuaries, water intakes, and archaeological sites. This polygon shapefile was created by CZM on September 9, 2008 by sketching the extent of each ESI map for Massachusetts. The ESI PDF maps were created by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to show sensitive habitat and biological resources, which were compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Purpose:
These data were created to show the location and provide a URL of all of the ESI PDF maps for Massachusetts. The ESI data were developed for oil spill planning and responding. ESI maps may be used to reduce the environmental consequences of an oil spill, to develop oil spill cleanup strategies, and to identify sensitive coastal resources.
