Abstract:

These vector point data represent the three permitted artificial reefs deployed in Massachusetts. Supplemental information including a brief history of their inception and their success in creating habitat can be accessed using the MORIS Hotlink tool. NOTE: This layer does not include fortuitously submerged artificial structures such as vessels.

Purpose:

The intended use of this data is to support diverse activities including planning, management, maintenance, research and interpretation. Creation of artificial habitat can be an effective method of increasing productivity, providing additional recreational and commercial fishing opportunities, and enhancing the forage base (i.e., provide attachment substrate for blue mussels and habitat for finfish; settlement, forage, and shelter habitat for lobster; and habitat for several life-stages of winter flounder.

This data is complete to the specifications of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. All individual unit deployments are represented. A unit may consist of multiple objects such as a cluster of cobbles, tires, or concrete debris. Again, the individual points represent deployment locations of such units.

These data were converted form Degrees, Minutes to Decimal Degrees (latitude/ longitude geographic coordinates) and entered into an Excel spreadsheet. Fields were created to provide information to the user in a GIS. The spreadsheet was saved as a dBase file (DBF) and added to the list of tables in an ArcView 3.X project. The data was then added as an Event Theme in ArcView and coverted to a shapefile. The ArcToolbox Define Projection Wizard was used to define the shapefile's coordinate system--Geographic, NAD 1927. The ArcToolbox Project Wizard was used to reproject the coordinates to State Plane, Massachusetts Mainland, NAD 1983, Meters.

Data from the Hubline reef were added by the Massachusets Office of Coastal Zone Managment on 09-18-2006. The data were coverted to polygons to points with each point representing the centroid of the polygon. All attribute data were retained.
